A Simple Approach to Living With Less

Setting the Course

As a stay-at-home mom, I feel that it’s my job to set the course for how our home functions. I don’t see it as old-fashioned to believe that my responsibilities include meal planning, keeping everyone clothed in something clean, and managing the mess around the house.  Managing the mess has been the most overwhelming part of my job, but I’m thrilled that minimalism is going to help me conquer it.

After a week of cleaning and purging junk out of our house, I was starting to feel unhappy that I was the only one who really wanted this whole minimalism lifestyle. But after some thought and some sound advice, I realize that my example and my role as the mom will help set the course for our family. It’s a nice realization and it helps me to see this as the long-term change it needs to be.

  1. If you haven’t checked out flylady.net yet, I recommend it. She has a lot of good advice also, including how not to feel like a martyr cleaning the house even if your family doesn’t seem to help.

Fly Lady is great! She’s great at breaking down big projects into small ones and staying on top of keeping a house clean. She also enforces the principle that we can accomplish A LOT in as few as 15 minutes. I’ve tried to use that principle with my minimalism efforts. Not every challenge to declutter needs to take all day. Even just tackling a single drawer can give you a great sense of accomplishment.
